I swear. I’m not. I promise to post some GCLS content tomorrow but tonight I have to read! As always I am way behind on my book group reading which is this Sunday. Fortunately it is no chore to do the reading since it is one of my all time favorite contemporary novels. I read this when it first came out and I’m so pleased that I am enjoying it just as much (and perhaps more since I’m sure I’m a better reader now than I was in 1992) as the first time. Sooo, if you have not read Donna Tartt‘s The Secret History rush to your nearest bookstore and get it — it is one of the best. There is a murder, there is an idyllic Northeastern college campus and there is great writing.
When the book was first released it had one of the most striking Chip Kidd covers I had ever seen:
If you can’t tell from the photo, the dust jacket is clear plastic which doesn’t actually sound so good but made for a very good looking book. The paperback version which is still available isn’t quite as striking but it’s not a dud either:
Right now, I am reading the Penguin edition — simple and sharp — I love these classic Penguin covers:
Here’s a taste — this bit occurs just after Camilla, one of the main characters, has cut her foot on a piece of glass in the lake:
Okay, back to reading!
