Is it possible it’s been a whole month since I’ve written a blog post? Atrocious. Bad, bad blogger!
I have been feeling semi-productive though. Been getting LOTS of research done for the Miles to Go sequel. This has been a mix of watching documentaries and reading. A fascinating memoir that I heard about after listening to the author interviewed on Fresh Air, Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead.
It’s not the most eloquently written book in the world but it is a riveting read from a guy who was deep inside the movement. I’ve also gotten back into Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 which charts the origins of Islamic fundamentalism and Al-Qaeda. Wright is a terrific writer and put this difficult material into much needed context. He actually based a one man play on the book which has now been made into a film that has been picked up by HBO and will air in the fall — can’t wait.
I took a little break from the research to read a novel I’d had on my list for ages.
A historical crime thriller set in Soviet Russia, Child 44, by the young British writer Tom Rob Smith. I could not put it down and that doesn’t happen that often. Smith unfolds the story very, very slowly which makes it especially delicious. He writes great characters too. As soon as I have a moment I’m going go grab the sequel, The Secret Speech
All for now — need to get some writing done today!
